Refractive correction is the process of designating prescription (or identifying the power of lens to be prescribed) to correct the visual defect that is already available.

The visual defect may beĀ

a) myopia (near-sightedness)
b) hypermetropia (far-sightedness)
c) astigmatism (cylindrical power)
d) presbyopia (reading power)

Refractive correction can be provided by means of eyeglasses, contact lens or through refractive correction surgery (lasik). Contact lens and Lasik surgeries though cosmetically appealing, wearing eyeglasses would be safest and simplest means of refractive correction.
